Overview

Clara Raymond is the kind of obstetrician any woman would want-caring, skilled, dedicated. But she is caught off guard when a pregnant woman is wheeled onto the labor and delivery floor with what seem to be minor complaints. The patient turns out to be Lydia Benson, a childhood friend who once saved Clara's life after a terrible horseback-riding accident. And at Lydia's side is her husband Gordon Robinson, a man whom Clara once loved passionately and then left-although she has never forgotten him.

That night in the labor and delivery rooms the brief reunion goes tragically wrong. For Clara, the consequences will include a journey to California and to her own past-and a rediscovery of hope in a place she never expected.

    Great book

I loved this book, it takes the reader in several different directions, really keeps you on your toes and also offers many scenes of intense suspense, leaving you page turning fast to see what will happen.

    Outstanding debut!

I did not feel this book was predictable at all. I actually thought the ending was quite different than I suspected. Quality of Care is all about the title. The Quality of Care we as people give and receive. Each of the characters has something to do with the title in their own way. This is one of those books that actually makes you see and hear the backdrop of the book. Since I rode horses growing up I was very familiar with the smells and sounds that the horses would make, it made me miss that part of my life. If a book can do that, it's a special one. I could also see and hear the waves crashing. I could smell the sea air, feel the hot winds that raced though the barn. This book is wonderful, as I read it, I loved how it would flow along, so quickly that before you knew it it was over.

    Please write more Elizabeth Letts

A friend told me to pick up this book, and boy am I glad I did! I thought it would be just a good light read, but it was a real page-turner, and gave me something to think about too. This writer reminds me of one of my other favorites, Jodi Picoult. I'll be looking for her next book for sure!

    Good, but predictable

I was really enjoying this book for the first 50 pages but then the story became so predictable. It felt contrived and I lost interest. It's a good attempt but it is weakened by convenient resolutions in the plot line.

    Superb debut!

Letts has crafted a haunting tale of loss and redemption in which a terrible medical mishap forces a surgeon to confront the ghosts of her past. Letts's prose is lucid and elegant, and she weaves the past and present storylines seamlessly. While the horsey setting will appeal to horse lovers, I highly recommend this book to horsey people and non-horsey people alike!

    A MUST READ

Letts has written a beautifully lyrical and compelling story full of well-drawn characters. As she reveals the layers of Clara's story, she pulls the reader into a vivid world that will stick with you long after you've put the book down. And don't count on putting it down until you've read every word. This is a book to be devoured in one sitting! Quality of Care will have an obvious appeal to horse lovers and those with an interest in medicine, but the issues addressed in this novel will matter to any reader. Highly recommended.
