Description: This, is an excellent resource for beginning SPSS users. Key features include the prominent use of figures and illustrations including dialog boxes and syntax sequences and numerous data sets with step-by-step analyses and interpretation.
Purpose: The purpose is to introduce students to statistical techniques and skills without reliance on mathematical computations which are embedded in SPSS software. This meets the needs of many students who need to learn the process more than the mechanics. The authors have met their objectives with great success.
Audience: The target audience could be both students and practitioners as well as any novice user of SPSS. I can see the audience expanding beyond students in psychology and sociology to include health education and other related disciplines. The authors are well qualified to write the book and its many versions.
Features: The book covers not only preliminary steps in data analysis (importing, setting up data, recoding variables), but also the main statistical tests used in the social sciences. Outstanding features of the book are the figures and boxes, syntax sequences, sample problems, and interpretative comments.
Assessment: The quality of this book is outstanding. While there are other books on the use of SPSS, I like the simple and illustrative format of this book which I believe students will find very helpful. We will use this book in my lab. Because this book uses SPSS 10, it is a necessary replacement for previous editions.
