PREFACE: QuarkxPress 4
There are over 70 new or enhanced features of QuarkxPress 4. We say "4" because there was 4.0, then 4.1, then 4.2, and now (at the writing of this book) 4.3.
You can tell what level you are at by checking the Quark Environment screen (which is where your serial number lives). All updates are on the www.quark.com web site.
The addition of Bezier curves, which includes clipping paths, text on a path, shape merging, freehand drawing, the conversion of text to a box, etc., provided a separate illustration application. Quark then merged the source code for the Windows, Mac OS, and international versions of QuarkxPress so it can ship on both platforms and for all primary languages simultaneously.
QuarkxPress 4 for Mac OS requires System 7.1 or higher (with a 68020 or higher processor or a PowerPC processor). QXP 4 for Windows requires Windows95, Windows NT 3.51, or Windows NT 4.0. The Mac OS and Windows versions of QuarkxPress both ship on CD-ROM. The Mac OS version is available in 68K, fat binary, and PowerPC versions. Get lots of memory.
Many of the international versions of QuarkxPress have been consolidated into QuarkxPress Passport, which supports multilingual publishing in Danish, Dutch, International English, U.S. English, French, German, Italian, Norwegian, Spanish, Swedish, and Swiss-German. East Asian versions of QuarkxPress 4 (Japanese, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, and Korean) remain single-language products.
4.x documents can be saved in 3.3x format. Page elements and text created with features specific to version 4 are modified when saved in 3.3x format. For example, Bezier boxes will become complexpolygon boxes. QuarkxPress 4 for Mac OS will work with most existing 3.3x XTensions, if you still need them. XTensions for QuarkxPress 3.3x for Windows will need to be updated for version 4.
Quark's CMS (Color Management Software) XTension provides HiFi color support including the ability to separate RGB graphics into HiFi color separations. QuarkxPress 4 provides ICC-based color management on both Mac OS and Windows systems. Apple ColorSync 2.1 and Kodak Digital Science technology are both be supported. The EfiColor XTension will no longer be included with QuarkxPress.

Summary
In 1993 Quark upgraded QuarkxPress to Version 3.3 for Macintosh and Windows. In 1997 Version 4.0 was introduced, followed by 4.1, 4.2, and 4.3 in 1998. As with many software developers, they integrated all new and enhanced features into their documentation. Although lists of the new features and information about many of them was provided in print and on their Web site, there was no single comprehensive guide to all of them in one place at one time.
This book is our attempt to bring all of the information about QuarkxPress 4 together. The only area we have not covered is that of color management, since it goes well beyond QuarkxPress.
This book is not a replacement for the QuarkxPress manuals. It attempts to provide a training aid for users who already know QuarkxPress and would like to review only the new and enhanced features.
