Children's Literature - Mandy Cruz
Within everything that surrounds us, we can find simple shapes. In this Spanish translation of What Shape Is It?, the author introduces us to basic shapes and uses photographs of everyday sights to demonstrate that the fundamental forms are all around. From counting triangles on a butterfly's wings to admiring the vertices in our homes, the author challenges us to search our surroundings to find the shapes she introduced us to in the opening pages. What shapes can you find on a flower, a turtle shell, or an ice cream cone? Close-up photos of a beehive, a snake and a fish, among others, implore readers to take a new look at familiar objects. The variety of photos and the beehive-making activity make this book feel more like a treat than a geometry lesson. When we are done learning the basic shapes we move on to three-dimensional shapes, with accompanying photos give us a new perspective on our afternoon snack. Reviewer: Mandy Cruz
