Overview

From the award-winning author of A Rose for the Crown, Daughter of York, and The King’s Grace comes another masterful historical novel—the story of Cecily of York, mother of two kings and the heroine of one of history’s greatest love stories. Anne Easter Smith’s novels are beloved by readers for their ability “to grab you, sweep you along with the story, and make you fall in love with the characters.”
• In Cecily Neville, duchess of York and ancestor of every English monarch to the present day, she has found her most engrossing character yet.History remembers Cecily of York standing on the steps of the Market Cross at Ludlow, facing an attacking army while holding the hands of her two young sons. Queen by Right reveals how she came to step into her destiny, beginning with her marriage to Richard, duke of York, whom she meets when she is nine and he is thirteen. Raised together in her father’s household, they become a true love match and together face personal tragedies, pivotal events of history, and deadly political intrigue. All of England knows that Richard has a clear claim to the throne, and when King Henry VI becomes unfit to rule, Cecily must put aside her hopes and fears and help her husband decide what is right for their family and their country. Queen by Right marks Anne Easter Smith’s greatest achievement, a book that every fan of sweeping, exquisitely detailed historical fiction will devour.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Thanks in no small part to William Shakespeare, history recognizes Richard III, the last king in the Plantagenet dynasty and last ruler of the House of York. But less well remembered is his mother, Cecily of York. An intelligent, dynamic woman unafraid of speaking her mind, she and her husband, also Richard, were a rare love match in a time of marriage as social and political contract. With her signature attention to detail, Smith fully fleshes out the life of this English lady and, through her eyes, skillfully dramatizes the thick of the Wars of the Roses. A master of historical accuracy and complex political intrigues, the author suffers one surprising downfall here; at times flat and at times awkward, the romance between Cecily and Richard works best when the lovers are apart. VERDICT Though this latest is not quite as effortlessly engaging as Smith's previous novels (e.g., The King's Grace), her fans will enjoy it.—Leigh Wright, Bridgewater, NJ

Anne Easter Smith continues her look at the turbulent Plantagenet period

In 1423 when she was nine years old, Cecily Neville meets twelve years old Richard of York at her father's Raby Castle. Both are raised in her family's household and matched off in an arranged marriage in 1824. However their marriage proves to be one of endearing and enduring love. She accompanies him to Rouen where he becomes the governor general of France and she becomes friends with Joan, who informs her she will be the mother of kings. When King Henry VI suffers a breakdown and is unable to rule any longer, Richard returns home as the Protector. However, others seeing opportunity force him to flee to Ireland while his wife and children remain at Ludlow Castle. Holding the hands of her offspring, Cecily stares down the enemy until her husband returns to be named the heir to the throne.

Anne Easter Smith continues her look at the turbulent Plantagenet period (see The King's Grave, A Rose for the Crown and Daughter of York) in this entertaining look at the monarch-maker (thirteen children with two becoming king). Bringing alive much of the fifteenth century through the heroine (she died at eighty) known for her brave stand during another of the civil wars of that era, fans will relish Queen by Right as the marriage of political convenience between the York and Neville families turns into an endearing enduring love match until his death in 1460.

    Awesome Heroine!

Cecily Neville definitely came before her time. There's nothing more she enjoyed than a good hunt. Even though her marriage is arranged to Richard Plantagenet, she and Richard find true love together. Their love is really amazing to watch grow and mature. As many readers and students of past royalty know, this is seems to be quite unusual. She's definitely a strong character and one that I rooted through throughout the book. I really loved her character. Another interesting thing that I found was how Smith has Cecily meet the infamous Jeanne d'Arc, another historical figure that I'm very interested in. Although Smith admits that there is no documentation of them actually meeting other than that they happened to be in the same castle at the same time, it's interesting to see the meeting of a member of royalty (Cecily) and a peasant girl (Jeanne). I really enjoyed that part of the novel. Cecily is a different kind of character than many in typical historical fiction novels. She's strong and she really has a hand in her own fate, a choice that so many heroines in this age did not have. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Cecily. Bottom line: This book is perfect for those who wish to read a historical fiction where the damsel is not always in distress.

    Didn't like it

It sounds like it'll be an interesting historical fiction but it's just about her and her husband having sex and her pregnancies and kids dieing/living. Not fun.

very fictitiously and like a Hollywood movie

3.5 Stars. My views are conflicting on this book? This is my second Easter Smith book "I loved A Rose for the Crown". In this novel the author tackles Cecily Neville, Duchess of York. I couldn't wait to indulge into Proud Cis' life.....wife of Richard of York and Mother to King's Edward IV and Richard III. AES writes sagas that could very easily be turned into a Sunday Night Movie or mini-series. She is very entertaining. On the negative, she writes very fictitiously and like a Hollywood movie over embellishes the truth to make her stories more exciting. This hurts her novel's credibility. I know this is historical fiction, but when certain things are historically known or documented, I like them to be factual in the book. Many things are accurate in this book, but there is a lot of over the top fiction. If you are looking for romance, this book has that. If you just want to be swept away, this book will do that also. There were parts that I loved and some parts that made me say "Please no, not the Jeanne "Joan" of Arc spirit again!" I recommend this if you like to be entertained, but if you are not into historical fluff, this is not for you.

    Great at the beginning

I thought the storyline at the beginnimg was great with the young love but when it switched back and forth from "present" and the "past" in her thoughts it was confusing...also i felt the storyline became extremely boring towards the end. Overall it was pretty great but be sure to have patience!

A Historical Novel That Should NOT Be Missed!!!

I am a HUGE fan of historical novels. And, I'm always excited to learn about new-to-me authors, especially those who can instantly pull me into their story. I was pleased to find that Anne Easter Smith was one such novelist after reading this FANTASTIC novel! Queen By Right is absolutely breath taking. It's rich in detail, history and a time gone by. Being transported into the pages of this rather larger book ( it IS big, but SO worth it!) was an indescribable feeling. Becoming acquainted with Cecily of York was an experience I won't soon forget, as I followed her life growing up and falling in love with her friend Richard. I felt myself transformed into a member of York, wearing the dresses, and seeing the dukes. FANTABULOUS feeling! If you are a history lover, then I suggest you grab a copy of this novel. While it is a huge book, please don't let that deter you from reading it. The writing style, and the life-likeness of the story and characters in this 5 star novel will leave you awe struck in the end. Anne Easter Smith is being added to my long growing list of favorite authors and I will be looking into her past and future works soon!
