Overview

Though the sun was hot on this July morning Mrs Lucas preferred to cover the half-mile that lay between the station and her house on her own brisk feet, and sent on her maid and her luggage in the fly that her husband had ordered to meet her. After those four hours in the train a short walk would be pleasant, but, though she veiled it from her conscious mind, another motive, sub-consciously engineered, prompted her action. It would, of course, be universally known to all her friends in Riseholme that she was arriving today by the 12.26, and at that hour the village street would be sure to be full of them. They would see the fly with luggage draw up at the door of The Hurst, and nobody except her maid would get out.

Ebook quality review - EXCELLENT for digireads version

If you know Lucia, you already know that E F Benson's social satire is wonderful. This is a review of the ebook quality. As of 02/29/12, there are 11 ebook versions available through B & N. The DIGIREAD version is the best. I prefer what is called a sans serif font, such as Arial or Gills Sans. Several of the other versions do not offer that option. The digiread version does. Second, there are none of those annoying errors from bad scanning. The text looks accurate, including the occasional Italian that ucia insists on using, caro mio. There are two negatives. First, there is no cover art or copyright history. I like a bit of cover art and a proper title page and publishing inform's ation page. Second, there is also no table of contents. However, since the chapters don't have titles, that's not so bad.

Ebook quality review posted 02/29/12 - addendum

Darn it. I didn't realize my post for one particular version of a book would apply to all the ebook versions. My excellent rating is for the DIGIBOOK version. Sorry for the confusion.

    delightful but...

Charming story and positively delightful characters, but it was all nearly ruined by terrible scanning. Several passages were rendered unreadable and I could only guess at what was meant to be there.
