Overview

Kallana wears the wildest clothes of anyone at her suburban Calgary junior high school. Still, it seems it's not enough to get the attention of her freelance photographer father or her non-kid-friendly mother. When her dad signs her up for the basketball team after Kallana is sent home from school for wearing "provocative" clothes, she's mortified: she can't dribble, she can't shoot, and the uniforms are just hideous. When her dad signs her up for the basketball team after Kallana is sent home from school for wearing "provocative" clothes, she's mortified: she can't dribble, she can't shoot, and the uniforms are just hideous. But as things get worse at home, basketball practice comes to be a welcome relief, and the self-confidence she learns at the free-throw line helps her prepare for the difficult changes she has to face. Queen of the Court is the touching story of a young girl whose experience of sport helps her cope with unexpected change.

Editorial Reviews

Canadian Book Review Annual
"An excellent choice for preteen girls. Highly recommended."
Children's Literature
Kallana Ohlmstead is an eighth grade girl who thinks she is the queen of cool and of fashion. However, her awkward tallness and her average looks give her a low image of herself. She has a mom who hardly pays attention to her because she is busy with her own work. Her dad's idea for her to join the basketball team to learn team spirit is one of the worst ideas Kallana has ever heard. Having no choice in the matter, she joins the team and learns a lot. Through trial and error, she learns how to play basketball and how to get along with the other girls on the team. It is the spirit of the team that helps her get through a new problem at home. The author holds the reader's attention through the action as well as the conflicts in the story. The book has a great story line that may help readers cope with their own problems. 2000, James Lorimer and Company, $5.50. Ages 10 to 13. Reviewer: Cathi White<%ISBN%>1550287036
