Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Jennifer Holm (Our Only May Amelia) and her brother Matthew Holm, a graphic designer, make an incursion on Captain Underpants territory with these comic books about a girl mouse. Both tales share eye-grabbing black-and-pink graphics, and a perceptible Spiegelman influence simmers in the energetic ink illustrations of the dot-eyed heroine. Queen of the World! introduces Babymouse and her nemesis, a popular cat named Felicia Furrypaws. Babymouse desperately wants an invitation to Felicia's slumber party (which she feels could confer "queen" status), although her best friend Wilson the Weasel expects her to watch monster movies with him that night. Fantasy sequences testify to Babymouse's reading habit and active imagination: in one reverie, she's Babymouserella, transformed into a princess by "fairy godweasel" Wilson, but undone by Felicia on the way to the ball ("In `Cinderella,' the mouse pulls the carriage. Duh!"). A sequel, Our Hero, centers on a gym class where unathletic Babymouse faces dodgeball whiz Felicia. Before the competition, Babymouse daydreams of boot camp, stomps on her antagonist as "Babymousezilla" and indulges in a Peter Pan sequence where a combined Felicia-Hook makes her walk the plank into the jaws of a crocodile (who doubles as the gym teacher). The Holms make humorous allusions to novels and movies, and interject sympathetic remarks from an offstage narrator. This personable, self-conscious mouse, with her penchant for pink hearts, resembles Kevin Henkes's Lilly, with some extra years of grade-school experience. Ages 7-10. (Dec.) Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature
The graphic novel format has arrived in the elementary school with a charming anthropomorphic heroine with whom female readers in particular can identify. As she goes through her boring, frustrating daily routine at home and school, Babymouse wonders where the glamour and adventure can be. Her friend and helpmate since kindergarten has been Wilson the Weasel; her nemesis the popular and snooty Felicia Furrypaws. Babymouse's wide-ranging imagination offers her adventures while she waits in vain for an invitation to Felicia's slumber party. When she finally gets one, she realizes the value of a real friend. With only a black felt marker and pink washes, the artists create the cartoon characters and simple settings. The visual narrative is presented in a variety of frames and vignettes, with most of the text in speech balloons, as is standard in comic strips. There is a driving energy to the drawings, along with animation, dramatic adventures, and lots of fun. 2005, Random House Children's Books, Ages 7 to 10.

Kirkus Reviews
In a graphic novelette illustrated in minimal, twocolor style, the Holms introduce a small, klutzy mouse with a very big imagination. Babymouse compensates for the lack of glamour, excitement and adventure in her everyday life by mentally casting herself as Queen, as a space explorer, as star of "Babymouse vs. the Squid," and more at the drop of a hatall while fretting that she hasn't been invited to nemesis Felicia Furrypaws' slumber party. But, finally trading her book report for an invitation, she discovers that the party's a mean and gossipy boreso it's off to steady friend Wilson the Weasel's for cupcakes and a horror movie. Young readers will happily fall in line to follow Babymouse through both ordinary pratfalls ("Typical!" is her watchword) and extraordinary flights of fancyboth of which continue in Babymouse, Our Hero ($5.95, ISBN 0375832300; PLB $12.99, ISBN 0375932305). She's a queen, that is --- a wanna-be queen... I am a BookLoons reviewer

There's a new heroine in town -- she arrived sometime before or after Santa did this past holiday. Her name is BABYMOUSE, and she's pert, saucy, full of imagination, a put-down attitude, but she must be pretty smart because she keeps puddles of books on the floor around her bed! There's a new heroine in town, she arrived sometime before or after Santa did this past holiday. Her name is BABYMOUSE, and she's pert, saucy, full of imagination, a put-down attitude, but she must be pretty smart because there are puddles of books on the floor around her bed! Babymouse finds her life a might dull each day - clean teeth, brush whiskers, yada - yada- yada! At school the same -- a locker that's stuck until she gives it a number of 'Bang Bangs', and oh dear, there's a library book overdue. And there goes her imagination¿ a tiara, flowers for her fame, she's become the Queen! Oops, not this time. But she'd settle for assistant queen. Uh, uh, no, no, -- according to everyone - Felicia Furrypaws is the Queen. But Babymouse has friends, like Wilson the Weasel, since kindergarten, who rescues her stuck locker and invites her over for movies. Speaking of movies, Babymouse's imagination is at work: '¿But in my line of work, you see it all. ¿suspicions ¿ clamming up¿ and Babymouse is a private investigator.' Wouldn't you know it, when a note gets passed in class through her, teacher pounces on Babymouse as the culprit¿ gulp! principal's office. Will she be invited to Felicia's slumber part? Maybe I can bribe her, she thinks. Hmm! Jennifer L. Holm & Matthew Holm are the illustrious creators, presenting their heroine's stories in cartoon cut-out fashion, in colors of white, pink, and black, with her name BABYMOUSE on the front cover, in shining silver! Young minds will cheer for Babymouse no matter what, and will think up ways on how they can help her meet her career goals!

    A reviewer

Babymouse: Queen of the World! by brother and sister team Jennifer and Matthew Holm is a graphic novel based on a middle-school-aged mouse. The comic book style text flows nicely from page to page appearing in different forms and fashions which make reading this book very enjoyable. The black, white, and pink ink illustrations are in an artistic cartoon format and seem to jump out at the reader from page to page helping the reader see into Babymouse¿s imagination and creativity. The illustrations greatly represent real life of a young teenager. Babymouse can easily be identified with by teens in her battles with popularity, friendship, and ordinary daily life. Babymouse wants to break away from the same old typical day-in-day-out routine. In this book, she finally gets the invitation to popularity she thinks she needs but comes to realize her world was not so bad after all.
