Overview

Lytton Strachey was a British writer and critic. A founder member of the Bloomsbury Group and author of Eminent Victorians, he is best known for establishing a new form of biography in which psychological insight and sympathy are combined with irreverence and wit. His biography Queen Victoria was awarded the James Tait Black Memorial Prize. Strachey's theory of biography was now fully developed and mature. He was greatly influenced by Dostoyevsky, whose novels Strachey had been reading and reviewing as they appeared in Constance Garnett's translations. Also the influence of Freud would be important on Strachey's later works, most notably on Elizabeth and Essex. This study of the childhood, marriage, and reign of England's beloved queen reveals a tender but determined woman. Her short life had hardly been a happy one. By nature impulsive, capricious, and vehement, she had always longed for liberty; and she had never possessed it.

Hilarious social commentary… If all biographies were like Stracheys, they would probably kill off the novel altogether.

I truly enjoyed reading and learning about the dignified queen. This history chronicles her personal life, including details about her noteworthy personality and ideals. I wish the account would have provided more information about the cultural context and global situation of her times.

I found Strachey's book to be one of the most interesting biographies I've read, more in book form than an actual biography. The inserts from her diaries really added to the content and helped get to know her character better. It flowed really well and I would recommenf this book for a fun report, but as for spare time reading... Maybe something a bit shorter.

I am not sure if it was just this version or not, but this book had text errors throughout. I was only able to take it for 11 pages.
