Description: This is the sixth edition of an evidence-based approach to high-risk conditions in pregnancy.
Purpose: The book provides an evidence-based approach to common maternal and fetal medical problems encountered during pregnancy.
Audience: Although written for practitioners, residents and ancillary staff also may find it helpful. The editors have tapped leaders in the field to write the chapters.
Features: The book covers aspects of a high-risk pregnancy, genetics, monitoring, maternal disease, obstetric complications, complications of labor and delivery, and procedures. The section on genetic screening for Mendelian disorders is written at an appropriate level and the information is very much geared to the clinician. I would have liked more images and perhaps an elaboration on the specific enzyme defects listed in table 5.1. The subsequent chapter on screening for congenital heart disease is also very well done. It has great images and lists the clinical conditions that one should suspect when it is not possible to visualize certain images. A table listing them might be worthwhile. The chapter on fetal lung maturity quickly lists the different types of tests and the strengths and weaknesses of each approach. I would have appreciated a more definitive statement on cascade testing, as it is something we have tried to minimize to avoid confusion. I did appreciate the statement on declining indications for testing. This chapter may have benefited from a chart with the percentile chance of positive result at a given gestational age.
Assessment: This is a very nice addition to a physician's library. It is easy to read and comprehend and written by authorities in the field. I would have appreciated more color images, but there is no arguing that it is a very nice reference.
