Overview

Both Jews and homosexuals have been seen, at different times and places, as the "other" and as outside normative categories of the larger society. The construction of Jewish and queer identities are "bound up with one another in resonant ways," even extending to modern discourses of anti-Semitism and homophobia, according to editors Boyarin (Talmudic culture and rhetoric, U. of California at Berkeley), Itzkovitz (literature, Stonehill College), and Pellegrini (religious and performance studies, New York University). They present 17 essays approaching the topic from the field of cultural studies and representing a range of immediate approaches; for example, topics include the way gender is represented by the Jewish character played by Barbara Streisand in the film "Funny Girl," and the sexualized aspects of Chaucer's portrayal of "the vicious murder of a saintly Christian child by perverse Jews" in the Canterbury Tales.
