Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"Offers a chance to energize the nursery rhyme collection with an interpretation of Mother Goose that’s as fresh and timeless as the rhymes themselves."  —Booklist
Children's Literature - Carlee Hallman
Fifteen little-known nursery rhymes are illustrated with a series of ink drawings filled in with watercolor paints. Characters are drawn in a prototypically English style, such as a man wearing a brown plaid caped great coat and a woman wearing a floor-length dress. One rhyme reads: "Jeremiah, blow the fire, Puff, puff, puff. First you blow it gently, Then you blow it rough." The picture shows a young lad in knee-length pants, a green tail coat, and a red vest blowing at a fire in a fireplace. The last picture shows a tremendous fire with smoke billowing into the room. An older lady and gentleman holding teacups are startled. A gray cat streaks off with raised fur. In another illustrated rhyme, a three-stringed fiddler charms fish from the sea, to the delight of boys with nets catching fish in the air. Another rhyme reads: "Goosey, goosey gander, Who stands yonder? Little Betsy Baker; Take her up and shake her." The pictures show a man in hat, jacket, and knee britches talking with a goose. The man then takes up a small girl and shakes her increasingly hard in three pictures. She is left stunned. The rhymes do not have titles. American and British children may enjoy these nonsense rhymes and funny pictures. Reviewer: Carlee Hallman
