Overview

New Hampshire's revolutionary patriots were among the first to confront royal authority. In defiance of Royal Governor John Wentworth, the state's citizens established a people's government early in 1774. The first American attack on a British fort occurred soon thereafter in December, when local militiamen raided Fort William and Mary.

These far-reaching events herald the beginning of the Revolution, a conflict that soon touched the rural village of Amherst, New Hampshire. Here historical characters Thompson Maxwell and Joshua Atherton will find their lives changed forever. Soldier Maxwell is soon involved in military confrontation, while pacifist lawyer Atherton opposes the war and is branded a Tory, eventually to be jailed for his beliefs. As Whig confronts Tory and neighbor turns against neighbor, this historically-based story of a typical 18th-century small town unfolds against the background of the war.
