School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 2-4This picture book provides a look at the growth of the United States while trying to capture the interest of children through a Where's Waldo format. The story line follows the Hornik family from Bohemia to California on their quest for gold in 1849. Each two-page spread illustrates one of the 10 stages of their journey across Europe, the Atlantic Ocean, and North America. A thief of many disguises who has stolen a gold crown from their hometown church travels the same route. The criminal and his contraband are supposedly hidden in each minutely detailed illustration. A map shows the trek west with the major stops indicated. An introduction provides some brief historical background. The difficulty of finding the crown and the thief varies from picture to picture. The mystery and the search will entertain young readers. Although the hardships are glossed over, children will come away from this story with an understanding of the travels of many immigrants to America.Stephani Hutchinson, Pioneer Elementary School, Sunnyside, WA
