Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kristin Harris
The format of this collection of tidbits of information about a wide range of subjects is a simple question and answer. The questions are quite direct(What is a star?(and the answers are usually not more than three or four sentences. The wide range of topics makes this an interesting collection, even though each subject is only briefly covered (there are over 230 questions in 80 pages). The questions are arranged by category: space, our world, nature and science, and technology. The limitation would be the brevity of the exposure to a particular subject. Conversely, this is a good introduction for a very young child whose curiosity is running wild and who is satisfied with quick answers so as to get on to the next subject. Very detailed and pleasant painted illustrations help direct the eye to the questions of most interest.
Children's Literature - Joyce Rice
This encyclopedic-style volume follows this publisher's usual format of question and answer about a variety of topics. The illustrations are well done and will pique even the young reader's interest. This book lends itself to being a picture book for the early reader ready to explore science and technology, but not yet able to read most non-fiction. In addition, it offers a source of quick information to the upper elementary grades. Chapters dealing with space are well presented, with maps of the solar system and diagrams of space vehicles. Chapters dealing with nature are a bit extensive, covering everything from prehistoric life and dinosaurs to farm animals and plant life. Because of this extensive coverage, very little information on any one subject can be found. This will be a beginning resource for most researchers, but cannot serve as a single resource. Although the publisher recommends this volume at age nine, this reviewer would expand this to age six.
