Continue to work around flower perimeter, alternating Short and Long Petals, joining yarn for each new petal.
Finishing
Weave cast-on tail around garter stitch center, pull tight to cinch center, then secure and knot in the back.
Weave in ends.
Sew a large button in center or work stamens in contrast color yarn as follows.
Stamens
Cut several strands of CC 6 inches long. Use tapestry needle to pull 1 strand through center of flower, from front to back, then back to front. Knot the 2 ends together tightly at the front, keeping the knot close to the flower. Trim ends to ¼ inch long. Rep until center is filled in with stamens or as desired.
Step 1: Work flower in the round on double-point needles from the center out to the end of Round 21.
Step 2: Work each petal tip separately back and forth on double-point needles, joining new yarn for each petal. Work around the perimeter of the flower, alternating between short and long petals.
Step 3: Weave in loose ends at the back of the work. Use a tapestry needle to thread yarn around the garter stitch center. Pull and knot to cinch tightly.
Step 4: The flower center can be finished several ways. Sew on a large button for quick finishing, or use contrasting yarn to create stamens. For stamens, use a tapestry needle to thread 6 inches of contrasting-color yarn through the flower center, from front to back, then back to front. Knot the two ends together tightly at the front of the work, keeping the knot close to the flower. Trim ends to ¼ inch. Repeat until center is filled in with stamens.
CHAPTER 2Poppy
This cheery flower is a cinch to make, with simple stitches and little finishing. It's worked as two separate layers, a lower red ring of petals and an upper black panel that are joined together with a center yellow button. The lower ring is worked in the round on double-point needles and the upper panel is worked back and forth on double-point needles.

Assembly
Weave in ends.
Using a tapestry needle and MC, baste around center hole in bottom petal ring, pull to cinch closed, knot and then secure ends.
Sew top petal panel by threading yarn from back to front through center of bottom petal ring, then through narrow end of top petal panel, then from front to back through center of bottom petal ring. Pull and knot to cinch tight.
Sew small button to center of assembled flower.
Step 1: Work the bottom petal ring in the round on double-point needles. Weave in ends.
Use a tapestry needle to baste a strand of contrasting color around the center of the ring. Pull to cinch closed, tie a knot and secure the ends.
Step 2: Work the top petal panel back and forth on two double-point needles.
Weave in ends.
Sew the top panel to the bottom petal ring by threading yarn from back to front through the center of the bottom petal ring, then through the narrow end of the top petal panel, then from front to back through the bottom petal ring. Pull and knot to cinch tight. Secure the ends.
Step 3: Sew a button to the center of the assembled flower, knotting yarn securely at back.
CHAPTER 3Day Lily
This five-petal flower is cast on around the outside and worked toward the center using central decreases and stitches worked in rows below for shaping. A pretty knotted edge is formed using the Channel Island cast-on, and it's finished with a button in the center.

Central Quadruple Decrease (CQD): Slip next 3 sts as if to k3tog, k2tog, pass 3 slipped sts over k2tog.
Knit 4 below (K4b): Knit into center of st 4 rows below — the sts already worked above will rest on the new st.
Pattern Notes
Flower begins on a circular needle; change to double-point needles when stitches no longer fit comfortably on the circular needle. This will probably be on Round 5.
Do not untie cast-on slip knot until you have worked a few rounds.
Flower
Using circular needle and using Channel Island Cast-On (see page 10), cast on 150 sts, pm after every 30 sts; pm for beg of rnd and join, taking care not to twist sts.
Rnd 1: Slide slip knot from needle and allow to hang (do not untie knot yet); knit around.
Rnd 2: *K13, CQD, k12; rep from * around — 130 sts.
Rnd 3: *K11, CQD, k10; rep from * around — 110 sts.
Rnd 4: *K4b, k8, CQD, k8; rep from * around — 90 sts.

Cut yarn. Run tail through rem sts, then fasten securely.
Finishing
Weave in ends.
Block if desired.
Sew button in center.
Channel Island Cast-On
Step 1: Measure off approximately 2 yards of yarn, make a fold and measure the same length until there are 3 lengths side by side. As you fold yarn as if to make a 4th length, make a slip knot approximately 4 inches from this folded end.
Step 2: Slip the knot onto needle, arrange yarn ends as if to work long-tail cast-on, with working yarn to back and triple-tail to front.
Step 3: Wrap thumb twice counterclockwise around triple-tail to form crossover.
Step 4: Bring needle clockwise around working yarn to form 1 stitch.
Step 5: Immediately bring needle over triple-tail then under crossover on thumb from bottom to top.
Step 6: Wrap needle clockwise over working yarn.
Step 7: Bring yarn back through crossover to front (2 stitches formed).
Step 8: Pull tight to form edge knot.
Central Quadruple Decrease
Step 1: Slip next 3 stitches as if to k3tog.
Step 2: K2tog.
Step 3: Pass 3 slipped stitches over the k2tog.
Finishing
Break yarn, thread needle with tail, run tail through all remaining stitches.
Tighten up center and fasten off securely. Sew button in center.
CHAPTER 4Primrose
A four-petal flower begins in the center with a crochet cast-on. It is worked as a square with alternating stockinette stitch and reverse stockinette stitch bands together with eyelet increases that form channels for cinching the finished square into a four-petal flower shape.
