ABOUT THE BOOK

True Blood is an HBO original production adaptation of Charlaine Harris Sookie Stackhouse mysteries. Harris reports that when her writing career was going nowhere, she decided to write in the genres she loved; mystery, the supernatural, and romance.

The books follow the life of Sookie Stackhouse, a telepathic waitress in the small Louisiana town of Bon Temps. Sookies life takes a turn toward the adventurous and dangerous when Bill Compton, a vampire, enters the restaurant where she works. By this time vampires have come out of the coffin and are living among humans as the result of the Japanese invention of Tru Blood, a synthetic blood that vampires can live on.

Alan Ball, the creator, producer and writer of True Blood says he stumbled upon the Sookie Stackhouse books while browsing in a Barnes and Noble. He was hooked by the first book and determined to turn it into a television show. The show loosely follows the books; season one covers Dead Until Dark and season two covers Living Dead In Dallas. While many of the characters and plot points are similar to the books, Ball makes several changes as well. The books are told in first person by Sookie, which limits much of what the reader sees. Ball, on the other hand, shows viewers first hand the habits of her horn dog brother Jason and the blood and gore that comes with being around vampires. The show is darker, more violent and sexual than the books.

EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK

Balls homosexuality has led some to believe that the plight of the vampires in True Blood is a metaphor for the challenges faced by the gay community. Ball balks at this saying in a 2010 Rolling Stone interview, I have a hard time seeing the vampires as a metaphor for gays and lesbians, just because the vampires on our show are, for the most part, vicious murderers and predators, and Im gay myself, so I dont really want to say, Hey, gays and lesbians are basically viciously amoral murderers.

Overall Summary of True Blood

Season two of True Blood contains two mysteries, one involving Bacchanalian Gods and the other an extremist Christian group. In the opening, Tara discovers Miss Jeannette, the woman who fraudulently exorcised a demon out of her mother, dead with her heart cut out in Andy Bellefleurs car. At the same time, Eric is trying to manipulate Sookie into helping him find his maker, Godric, who has likely met foul play at the hands of the Fellowship of the Sun. During the course of the season, townspeople come under the influence of Maryann who is seeking to sacrifice Sam to her God. Andy recognizes odd happenings, but no one listens to him, especially since hes started drinking again...
