Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
The book's author has written more than sixty books for children—mostly about science and nature topics—highly suited for elementary school projects. From the series "Wonders of Science," Quicksand provides the young reader with a fascinating account of what quicksand is, how it is formed, its dangers, and how to avert disasters. We quickly learn that "When the waterlogged sand can no longer support weight, it is said to be quick." Yet other substances can become quick: dirt, salt, pebbles, and gravel, for example, can liquefy and quicken. We are instructed on how to identify and avoid quicksand that is hidden in brush or hardened on the surface. The photographs, taken from various sources, often portray horrifying scenes of being trapped in quicksand. In movies quicksand is usually portrayed as being more dangerous than it really is in nature, where a person can usually stay afloat until rescued, sometimes by helicopter. Cars and people have been known to disappear without a trace. Liquefaction can cause spectacular natural disasters, such as those in San Francisco, Alaska, and Niigata (Japan) associated with earthquakes. Besides graphic photographs, the book provides an index, glossary, and suggestions "For Further Exploration." 2003, KidHaven Press/The Gale Group,

Gr 5-8-Quicksand! The word conjures up visions of old movies about jungle expeditions, where the villain inevitably ends up disappearing beneath a glutinous mass, one hand clutching the air in a final frenzy. Well, here is the real story of this liquefied earth-how and where it forms, why it can be dangerous, how to escape it, and why it can be catastrophic when such liquefaction occurs in conjunction with an earthquake. A fact/myth box, diagram, and black-and-white and color photos accompany the anecdote-filled text. An interesting geological step up from Tomie dePaola's The Quicksand Book (Holiday, 1977), and fun to consider for a science project.-Patricia Manning, formerly at Eastchester Public Library, NY Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
