Overview

In the New York Times-bestselling author's latest Arcane Society novel, a paranormal killer pushes an unlikely duo's powers and passions to the limit.

Virginia Dean wakes at midnight beside a dead body, with a bloody knife in her hand and no memory of the evening's events. Dark energy, emanating from the mirrors lining the room, overpowers her senses. With no apparent way in or out, she is rescued by a man she has met only once before, but won't soon forget.

Owen Sweetwater inherited his family's talent for hunting the psychical monsters who prey on London's women and children, and his investigation into the deaths of two glass-readers has led him here. The high-society types of the exclusive Arcane Society would consider Virginia an illusionist, a charlatan, even a criminal, but Owen knows better. Virginia's powers are real-and they just might be the key to solving this challenging case.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
The only thing that surprises high-level glasslight talent Virginia Dean more than waking up in a glittering mirrored room next to a dead body is having enigmatic investigator Owen Sweetwater, a man she has little reason to trust, come to her rescue. But Owen is not there by accident. He is hunting a killer targeting glasslight readers, and he badly needs Virginia's help. Intrigued, Virginia warily agrees, never thinking that in working so closely with Owen to unmask a sociopath, she will fall in love with, and be claimed by, one of the most dangerous men she has ever met. This is the second in the trilogy within the larger "Arcane Society" series featuring books written by Jayne Ann Krentz under all of her noms de plume. Quicksilver follows the contemporary In Too Deep by Krentz. The last book, Canyons of Night by Jayne Castle, Krentz's futuristic alter ego, is scheduled for a September release. VERDICT Once again the ever-entertaining Quick treats readers to a wickedly witty, mercurial tale, filled with her own sexy brand of humor-laced sensuality, an abundance of intriguing characters (including a dazzling collection of Millicent Bridewell's exquisitely made, deadly clockwork toys), and a lively adventure successfully resolved but lightly peppered with tantalizing hints of what's to come. Quick lives in the Seattle area. [See Prepub Alert, 10/25/10.]
Library Journal
This is such a new trilogy that Book 1, In Too Deep (by Quick's alter ego Jayne Ann Krentz, go figure), isn't even out until January 2011. In that book, paranormal investigator Fallon Jones settles in Scargill Cove, blessed with powerful energy fields likely to attract the nuttier among us. Here, Jones and assistant Isabella are being hounded by a paranormal killer. Classic Quick; fans can get special collectors' packets of the trilogy assembled by the author by visiting her website.

    Surprised

I have read all of Amanda Quick's books, and this is the first time I was disappointed with her book. This latest book "Quicksilver" was boring. There was no spark, no excitement, or sizzle. Hopefully Ms. Quick will make it up to her faithful readers in her next book.

    Formulaic Krentz but nonetheless entertaining

I couldn't tell if I'd read her other books with characters alluded to in this one or just descriptioins and/or reviews; not a lot to distinguish this story line from others. It was still a decent escape read. I did find the wrap-up paragraphs a little rushed.
