Barnes & Noble - Andrew Farach-Colton
Few instruments evoke an atmosphere of rapt intimacy better than the harp, and this lovely, lyrical program will surely please those looking for some soothing background music. There's also plenty of musical pleasure here for those who want to listen more carefully. In her various recordings on the Telarc label, Yolanda Kondonassis has proven to be a performer of intelligence, taste, and impeccable musicianship. This disc offers some selections one has come to expect on a classical "relaxation" album -- a "Gymnopédie" by Satie and Debussy's "Réverie," for example -- but most of the repertory is less predictable. The CD opens and closes with some ecstatically meditative pieces by the French composer and harpist Carlos Salzedo (1885-1961). In between, our ears are treated to a sweet "Song Without Words" by Mendelssohn, an exquisitely delicate "Notturno" by Respighi, and a charmingly old-fashioned "Berceuse" by Sibelius. Other selections by Debussy, Chopin, and Satie round out this beautifully recorded recital. The three "Gnossiennes" of Satie are particularly well done; Kondonassis captures their quirkiness as well as their melancholy with unaffected eloquence.
