Written by Academy Award-winning composer Stephen Warbeck Shakespeare in Love, Billy Elliot, Mrs. Brown, the score reflects the struggle of its protagonist, the Marquis de Sade played by Geoffrey Rush, with an eclectic mix of styles that juxtaposes classical period orchestration, rhythms, and harmonies with contemporary sounds and instrumentations. In addition to incorporating a full orchestra, Warbeck includes both a choir that can sound both cherubic "The Convent" and eerily lascivious "Dream of Madeleine" and unexpected instruments such as pipes and drain pipes played in and out of water, didjeridoo, and prepared strings, all used with ingenuity and wit, especially in "Aphrodisiac." He also brings into the fray the Lunatic Band, whose members play standard instruments tuned to unusual string tunings "The Printing Press" or "prepared" in some alternative fashion i.e. the strings are treated with a foreign object, such as a paper clip. Warbeck's music aptly fits the film's subject matter, with twists and turns on every track, as he constantly plays light against dark. Specifically, the spine-tingling "The Marquis' Cell at Charenton" mixes crazed voices and sounds, which lead to a Psycho-like string section that's both celestial and demonic. Simply captivating, Warbeck's score captures the spirit of the wicked black comedy/thriller with ease.
