PreS-Gr 1-- When a green velvet dragon joins the blue quilted elephant at Andy's house, jealousy flares as each stuffed animal vies for the boy's attention. As he packs for an overnight at his friend Kevin's house, they argue as to which one will be chosen to go along--but to their surprise, there is room for both. Packed in the same bag, they become bound together in fear as Andy debates trading them and a few of his toys for Kevin's automated toy car, but by bedtime all is happily resolved. The themes of jealousy and sibling rivalry are all too obvious, and are handled without the wit and warmth of such titles as Henkes's Julius, the Baby of the World (Greenwillow, 1990). Muted watercolor illustrations, sometimes framed, at other times extending to the edges of the pages, are serviceable but undistinguished. A pedestrian effort. --Diane S.
