This short novella is one of Maggie MacKeever's better works. It's hard to construct real characters in such a short amount of time but given the length restrictions she does an impressive job of developing not one, or two, but three interesting and unusual personalities in the space of a few chapters. One of the things I like best about this author is that her backstory is usually so complex that we feel like we're getting a snapshot of a real person's life. This is no exception. My only complaint was a lack of depth compared to her longer books and the speed at which the character's difficulties were wrapped up. Everything seemed a bit too tidy by the end.
