Overview

In Dos Rios, Texas, life is all about borders -- and what happens when you cross the line. A fresh new series in the tradition of Bluford High explores what it's like to grow up on the edge.

A quinceanera for the record books?

If Fabiola Garza had her way, her quinceanera would be as simple and as non-traditional as possible-just two airline tickets to New York City and her best friend in tow. Sadly, things hardly ever go Fabi's way.

After mean girl Melodee lays down a quinceanera challenge in front of the entire school, Fabi is forced to upgrade her party plans. Melodee is rich and popular-her quinceanera will be effortlessly epic. Fabi is at a loss as to how to make her party remotely as fun and fabulous as Melodee's is sure to be. Younger sister Alexis steps in with a scheme to get Fabi on the TV show Quince Dreams-but Fabi isn't convinced she won't end up in a quince nightmare instead.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
Praise for Border Town #1: Crossing the Line

“Packed with action and surprising twists and turns up to the very last page, this start to the new Border Town series is a gripping mystery and also a warm, contemporary Latino drama of extended family and friends… With lots of laughs, especially about small town lack of privacy and about extended family, the drama is both suspenseful and touching.” --Booklist

“A fast-paced, easy-to-read book that Latino teenagers will enjoy to read – mostly because they will see themselves in the pages.” – The Hispanic Reader

Children's Literature - Phyllis Kennemer
Fabiola Garza's fifteenth birthday has come and gone. She had hoped to travel to New York rather than a have a quinceanera, but her father has vetoed the trip. When Fabi has a confrontation with Melodee in the school cafeteria, she emerges in an unwanted contest to have a better quinceanera than her rival. Fabi's sister and her grandmothers conspire to get her on Quince Dreams, a TV show that puts on fabulous quinceaneras. Unfortunately, they don't stick with the truth in the application and when Fabi is selected as a winner, she is at first unaware of the bombshell awaiting her. When the TV producer discovers that she is not dying of a mysterious illness, it looks like the game is up. Then Melodee's vicious nature is revealed and the producer decides to proceed. The unanswered question remains, "Did Fabi dance with the devil at her quinceanera?" The characters in this fast-paced story are realistic, conveying emotions experienced by many teenagers as they negotiate their high school years. Part of the "Border Town" series.
