    Don't buy this book.

For many reasons I advise against buying this book. It is difficult to work with: tiny print, no room to write, too tight a binding, etc. Aside from the physical shortfalls, it does not deliver what it promises: cryptograms. I didn't want the odds and ends of other puzzles that are offered. And it would have been nice to have even one clue, should a person need it. A waste of money, and a book I'll never use.

Good quotes, but font FAR too small

I found the quotes to be better than usual with wide variety of topic. But the font in the book is so tiny that it is difficult to work the puzzles. I found myself wishing I could enlarge them on a copy machine.

    Too Small

I have razor-point pens and tiny handwriting, but the puzzles in this book are too small to accommodate directly entering the solutions.

A Terrific and Challenging Journey to Crypto-Land

Terry and Sam have created a wonderful and challenging book that is great fun, but not for the faint of heart. I think it will appeal especially to younger puzzle-solvers, and those of us who enjoy an occasional full mental gymnastics workout. It's also a great way to better learn the intracacies of cryptography, while achieving the joy of accomplishment in the process.

    Challenging and fun

This book offers over 500 coded quotes using a variety of coding techniques. Substitution ciphers, random letter substitution, rail fence ciphers, and complex quagmire ciphers are techniques you will use to find the quotes.

The quotes come from a wide variety of sources, including Alexander Graham Bell, George Bernard Shaw, Douglas Adams, Frank Lloyd Wright, Bill Gates, Brooke Shields, Mae West, Albert Einstein, and Charles M. Shultz.

Quotable Cryptograms has puzzles for beginners, and a hints section to get you in the mind set. It also has advanced ciphers that will require tenacity and patience. if you have ever thought of working for the NSA, these puzzles will test your ciphering skills and perhaps your knowledge of the famous people who are quoted.

Understanding of "real" purpose of the book

The purpose of this type of book is to reach out and capture the younger or newer "cryptograper" by creating a challenge. It seems the entire book has been designed to do just that. Being one of these newer "players" I disagree with the reviewer's negative statements. Is it for everyone - no. Should it be given as a wedding gift, probably not but for those wanting to develop this type of thinking skill, this is the book for your library.

    Really Great CVJXMLW-HNVYM

Terry Stickels and Sam Belloto have written a code-breaker's year-of-Sunday-morning delights. Very challenging and enjoyable. I solved one of them and laughed out loud with glee. I proudly showed my wife the page of chicken-scratch I used to solve the cryptogram. She shook her head and walked away. Now she know I'm hooked on these. Delightful.

My only complaint...When does the next one come out?

    Challenging Cryptos

If you're looking for simple cryptograms to solve while occupied in the restroom or laundromat, this isn't for you. This book has over 300 challenging, original cryptograms that include Playfair, Quagmire, and Railfence puzzles, along with traditional cryptograms. They are different and a whole lot of fun. Most of them require more than two brain cells to decipher. Plenty of explanation is given how to solve the more difficult entries, so you won't be lost. If you want a book of puzzles that really are puzzles, that will last a long time, and maybe even drive you just a little bit crazy, I highly recommend this unique volume from Stickels and Bellotto. And kudos to Random House for pushing the envelope and not giving us more of the same old same old tired daily newspaper fodder.

    I Also Recommend:

Best Cryptogram book I've ever seen.

Thoroughly enjoyable and challenging. Terry Stickels and Sam Belloto have outdone themselves on this one. Entertaining and thought provoking throughout.

Not worth having at any price.

The print is so small that it is virtually impossible to solve the puzzles without rewriting them. Some of the puzzles require separate tables to solve. Some of the directions are pages long. All in all this book is a waste of money.
