KLIATT
Greenhaven Press puts together anthologies that cover history and public events in a wide variety of ways. The People Who Made History series is a fine addition to their catalogue. The plan follows other Greenhaven projects: The books have four or five chapters each, which include three to six excerpted essays and can be used by students in grades 9-12. Individual pieces run anywhere from two to ten pages each. Each section and each item has introductory material. This series also includes an appendix of document excerpts. The mixed focus on the personal life and public issues and controversies is effectively handled here. The use of a person to make a historical period come alive in rich depth is accomplished with real skill and finesse. (People Who Made History) KLIATT Codes: SA—Recommended for senior high school students, advanced students, and adults. 2000, Greenhaven. illus, bibliog, 240p, 23cm, $17.45. Ages 16 to adult. I thought that this book was very informative. The book described the life of John F. Kennedy in a very clear context and it was very easy to find information. However I thought that the overall tone of the book was very boring. I think that this book is better suited to those who have a passion for history since he was a very busy president while he was alive. If this book is red by a casual reader I do not think they will enjoy it. A major theme of this book was to inform the audience with as much information as possible. I like that it describes the major events of his life in great detail and clarity. These events also shaped the country and how it ran in the future. I would give this book a 7 out 10 because it was informative but at the same time it was very boring read. The way that the information was given out I found that it was bland and unexciting. The book described his life form the day he was born to the day he was killed in Dallas. The book even has the documents and a timeline that sorts out his life in a very clear way. At the end of the book there is a very detailed glossary and timeline about Kennedy's life. There was also documentation of the issues that he had to face in his time as the president of the United States. These sections made the book very easy to understand form a factual point of view. I have to say I have a problem with how the book is laid out. It is very factual but for someone who does not understand the time period this book could be very difficult for a regular person to follow. I could very easily equate this book to a history book as it has a very particular tone to inform rather than involve the reader. Other works by this author have shown that they can write the biographies really well. I would especially recommend using this book as a research project because it is very factual.
