Selected verses from the Qur'an

Sura 49, Verse13

O mankind! We created you form a single (pair) of a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that you may know each other (not that you may despise each other). Verily the most honored of you in the sight of Allah is (he who is) the most righteous of you. And Allah has full knowledge and is well acquainted (with all things).

4:135

O you who believe! Stand out firmly for justice, as witnesses to Allah, even as against yourselves, or your parents, or your kin, and whether it be (against) rich or poor: for Allah can best protect both. Follow not the lusts (of your hearts), lest you swerve, and if you distort (justice) or decline to do justice, verily Allah is well-acquainted with all that you do.

5:32

On that account: We ordained for the Children of Israel that if any one slew a person-unless it be for murder or for spreading mischief in the land-it would be as if he slew the whole people: and if anyone saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of the whole people. Then although came to them Our Messengers with Clear Signs, yet, even after that, many of them continue to commit excesses in the land.

5:45

We ordained therein for them: "Life for life, eye for eye, nose for nose, ear for ear, tooth for tooth, and wounds equal for equal." But if anyone remits the retaliation by way of charity, it is an act of atonement for himself and if any fail to judge by (the light of) what Allah has revealed, they are (no better than) wrong-doers.

3:133

Be quick in the race for forgiveness from your Lord, and for a Garden whose width is that (of the whole) of the heavens and of the earth, prepared for the righteous,

3:14

Fair in the eyes of men is the love of things thye covet: women and sons; heaped-up hoards of gold and silver; horses branded (for blood and excellence); and (wealth of) cattle and well-tilled land. Such are the possessions of this worlds life; but in nearness to Allah is the best of the gold (to return to).

42:5

The heavens are almost rent asunder from above them (by His Glory): and the angels celebrate the Praises of their Lord, and pray for forgiveness for (all) beings on earth: Behold! Verily Allah is He, the Oft-Forgiving, the Most Merciful

61:10-11

O you who believe! Shall I lead you to a bargain that will save you from a grevious Penalty? - That you believe in Allah and His Messenger, and that you strive (your utmost) in the Cause of Allah, with your property and your persons: that will be best for you, if you but knew!

41:33

Who is better in speech then one who calls (men) to Allah, works rightousness, and says, "I am of those who bow in Islam"?

6:159

As for those who divide their religion and break up into sects, you have no part in them in the least: their affair is with Allah: He will in the end tell them the truth of all that they did.

6:59

With Him are the keys of the Unseen, the treasures that none knows but He. He knows whatever there is on the earth and in the sea. Not a leaf falls but with His knowledge: there is not a grain in the darkness (or depths) of the earth, not anything fresh or dry, (green or withered), but is (inscribed) in a Record clear (to those who can read).

3:95

Say: "Allah speaks the Truth: follow the religion of Abraham, the sane in faith; he was not of the Pagans."

10:58

Say: "In the Bounty of Allah, and in His Mercy, - in that let them rejoice": that is better than the (wealth) they hoard

17:24

And out of kindness, lower to them wing of humility, and say: "My Lord! Bestow on them Your Mercy even as they cherished me in childhood."

    I loved it

Perhaps I am biased because this is the first Qur'an I ever read (I have read more than this as of now though) I have to say this version is my favorite. Abdullah Yusuf Ali has really captured the beauty of the Qur'an in the English language. Although no translation will ever do justice to the original Arabic, I have to say that this really makes one go in awe at the beauty and majesty of the Qur'an. The language is clearly written, and made so that it appears to be ancient (written with thees and thou etc.) For anyone interested in Islam and looking for fun while reading, I suggest this version of the Noble Qur'an. I give it a 5 out of 5

    The Love of God

Yusuf Ali's translation of the Holy Qur'an touched me deeply. The message from the Prophet Muhammad, may peace and blessings be upon him, is so holy and so pure, I am truly amazed at the gift that he brought for humanity. Anyone searching for the truth about himself and his heart will be moved and inspired through this reading.

    A new approach in tafsir

This is a new approach in tafsir as far as I can see. It is a good one for non-arabic speaking students. This volume is the first of sixteen volume series. It is mainly introduction. This volume has no tafsir in it but if you continue to other volumes it starts in Volume Two. Author takes ayats in groups, provides English translation with arabic text next to it than he follows with a sort of dictionary where some key and speculative Arabic words are explained and their various meanings are described according to different interpreters, than comes a section where the general subject in those selected group of ayats are described and than author goes into his tafsir of those ayats. He refers to old teachers, Tabari, Qurtubi, Ibn Keasir. Time to time where necessary he refers extensively to old and new testament where the subjects are common. It is a sunni Tafsir so for people of other sects there are clearly disputed interpretations. I found in many locations opinions or statements that I could not get the same conclusion but that is why there are so many interpretations.Over all I think it is agood one and I am happy to have it.

A Good Working eBook Edition of the Quran

This is the revised 1995 editon of Ali's 1938 original. I see that the previous reviewer was highly critical of this fine ebook edition because of Microsoft Reader, which after trying for a year I now refuse to use because it is so slow and does not have the navigational flexibility or robust features of Adobe's eBook Reader. I purchased the Adobe eBook edition and it's not only fast and thoroughly cross-linked/hyperlinked throughout, but the text is easy to read. My Adobe eBook edition is very fast indeed. My two gripes are with the Barnes & Noble Digital group who disabled both the print/copy and find functions of the text. I try to avoid e-books that do not allow the user to print them; it just seems to defeat any advantage to owning an ebook. (One can 'look' at it, but not much else.) I do recommend this copy of the Quran, though, because Ali's work has not only stood the test of time, but continues to be updated in English with minor changes. Be aware that the translation reads very much like 18th century English prose, which is filled with outdated terms such as thou, thee, art, hast, verily, forth, etc. It's not a hindrance to most readers, but one should be aware of it before purchase.

Me personly i think you should only read the Quran by Abdullah Yusuf Ali because this is one of the ones that are acually right,i am a muslim and alot of the Qurans were created by americans and so far every one was wrong ,sorry, people think that arabs are these bad people that just kill because we want but acually its not we are regular people we might have a different skin color,or might not practice the same religion as others but we are still people i mean we have hearts and brains ,right!

Recommended for those who are looking for English translation only, without its Arabic format which is absolutely necessary for recitation.
