Against great odds, they changed their own lives-and their worlds. Stories of princesses from different cultures and different epochs in history are richly illustrated with photographs, maps, and lovely pen-and-watercolor paintings that help bring these fascinating females to life.

In what could be a tale from The Arabian Nights, this book tells the story of a girl who grew up in 13th-century Persia to be so desirable that she was kidnapped several times for her beauty. Qutlugh Terkan Khatun found refuge at last in the arms of a prince, who married her and made her a princess. With him she ruled a nation, and the people asked her to continue as their sovereign after the prince's death. Her wisdom brought the people a golden age of peace and prosperity, and she is known, above all, for her kindness and compassion. Sections on the clothes Qutlugh Terkan Khatun wore, the foods she ate, and why she is remembered today are included.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Annie Laura Smith
This is a story about a girl who grows up in 13th Century Persia, is kidnapped several times because of her beauty, and eventually marries a prince. Because of her kindness and compassion, the people ask her to be their ruler after her husband's death. During her 26-year reign, she brings their country peace and prosperity. Her story is a real life fairy tale, and will show young girls that they can make a difference in their world. This book is part of the six-book series, "The Thinking Girl's Treasury of Real Princesses". Other books in this series include: Hatshepsut of Egypt, Artemisia of Caria, Sorghaghtani of Mongolia, Isabella of Castile, and Nur Jahan of India. This series celebrates women who were princesses throughout history, and provides insight into their cultures and deeds. Although Qutlugh Terkan Khatun of Kirman covers an individual biography, the information contributes to the overall concept of princesses who made a difference in their respective countries.
