Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Children's Literature
In her now-formulaic approach, Gibbons introduces an animal species, discusses characteristics or special features, predators, food, and habits, and places additional facts in backmatter. This includes how to raise a rabbit as a pet, a diagram showing the difference between a wild rabbit and a hare (hare is bigger, more powerful, solitary), well-known bunny stories, and odd kinds of rabbits. While the information is straightforward and complete enough for reports, the illustrations have a dreary sameness of line and color, necessitated, perhaps, by the subject depicted, the common and mostly brown rabbit. No index or table of contents. 2000, Holiday House, Ages 4 to 8, $16.95. Reviewer: Susan Hepler—Children's Literature

K-Gr 3-Gibbons supplies some history and background before expounding on leporid-family characteristics, habitats, reproduction, and different breeds. She compares hares to rabbits and explains the difference between wild and domesticated. Three pages explain how to care for a pet rabbit and one page is dedicated to rabbit trivia and lore. The watercolor-and-ink illustrations have a sketchbook quality, and it is sometimes difficult to differentiate among many of the breeds mentioned. These pictures are not as sharp and clean as those found in the artist's previous books. Nevertheless, this title is a good read-aloud that will appeal to independent readers as well.-Jill O'Farrell, Tatum Primary School, TX Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.|
