Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Janis Flint-Ferguson
Part of the "National Geographic Kids" series, this book teaches children how to read while helping them to appreciate NASCAR. Written in big bold print and coupled with crisp, bright, color photography, the text puts new readers inside a racecar. From the start of the race through pit stops and the checkered flag, the text asks readers to imagine what it is like to drive a racecar, using short sentences, rhymes, and repetition to describe the feel of the race. At the very end, the book presents a nursery-rhyme-style clapping song to reinforce the movement of a racecar around the track. The song provides a creative extension to the reading experience. The book is for those at a pre-reader level and introduces them to reading about real life sport, making it a great special interest book for school and home libraries.
