More About This Book

Overview

John McCain's campaign trail was at times tumultuous, with headlines often declaring him the next candidate out of the running. With the odds against him he prevailed, emerging as the Republican front runner. Leading up to his success, there were many candidates, events, and issues that cartoonists from around the country used to entertain their readers. This companion The Race for the 2008 Democratic Nomination encapsulates the campaigns of the candidates through these cartoons. Some might have considered Rudolf Giuliani the non-candidate as a result of his late entry into the primaries, while former Law & Order star Fred Thompson was not able to generate enough interest due to his own late entry. Mitt Romney's positions were well received and set him up as a solid candidate from the beginning, but media attention regarding his faith eventually took its toll and he was unable to glean the backing necessary to proceed. Winning the Missouri caucuses, Mike Huckabee remained in the race the longest, but lack of funds limited his progress. Alongside Huckabee, Ron Paul, who appealed to many libertarians, also attempted to last the duration of the primary season. In the end John McCain's solid stance on the issues pulled him through and he moved on to debating them amongst the oftentimes dramatic activity on the Democratic side of the process.
