Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Bonita Herold
Wheeler gives an overall view of Rachel Carson, an environmentalist ahead of her time. Told in language understandable to first through fourth grade readers, the biography covers Ms. Carson's love of both nature and the written word and tells of how she succeeded at turning those loves into a career at a time when women just did not do those things. When young readers realize that Ms. Carson began writing about nature as early as age eight, getting published as early as age eleven, they will surely be getting out their own art supplies, pencils, and computers. Complete with a timeline, how-to instructions to build a terrarium, and a glossary, the book attempts to further the reader's interest in environmental studies—and does an excellent job of it. As one book in the series "Women in Science," Rachel Carson: Extraordinary Environmentalist will inspire young girls to investigate the world around them. Reviewer: Bonita Herold
