Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Myrna Dee Marler
Using many pictures and a text designed for elementary school students, this short chapter book details for children the life and contributions of Rachel Carson, a woman most known as the author of Silent Spring, the book that alarmed the world about the dangerous use of pesticides and their impact on the environment. The short chapters include a biography of her life. She was apparently the sole support of most of her family for much of her life. Perhaps as a result, she never married, but she was a true scientist and writer. There is also a discussion of each of her works (she wrote four nonfiction bestsellers), the impact of her work, historical background, the opposition she faced, and her ultimate vindication and triumph. For those who want to know about the pioneering work done by leaders in the field of living green, this book and the series are a great start. It comes with an index and is part of the "Voices for Green Choices" series. Reviewer: Myrna Dee Marler

Biographical accounts from childhood explorations to adult achievements emphasize encounters with nature, family support, and other influences. Each person profiled, except Wouk, used some form of media-from books by Muir and Carson to television programs from Suzuki and Begley-to champion environmental causes, and those presentations are discussed at length. Callery instead stresses the hybrid car technology that Wouk pioneered. Suzuki is valuable because that environmentalist's achievements are less familiar to readers in the United States than in his native Canada. Although all volumes suggest additional print and Web resources, many of those in Begley target adults. Effective use of color photos and sidebars against bright backgrounds make the volumes visually attractive.
