Female Maryland-based jockey Nikki Latrelle is grieving the sudden, questionable death of her fellow jockey Paco when she's asked to take a small string of horses and a small crew down to Colonial Downs in Virginia.

While there, her friend and colleague exercise rider Lorna Doone falls crazy in love with a handsome cad who might be getting her hooked back on drugs again. Meanwhile, Nikki sees signs of what may have killed her friend in Maryland showing up in Virginia. And attracts the attention of a bad element as she noses around to protect her friend.

A vivid, fast-paced story that could have only been written by a racing insider. Horse lovers will enjoy the personalities of the horses. Race fans will enjoy the look at training thoroughbreds and what goes behind the scenes in the backstretch.

    I couldn't put it down.

While the story wasn't overly exciting and didn't grab me, it was still a solid book. The writing was strong and the characters were well-fleshed out.
