Children's Literature - Kathie M. Josephs
Toward the end of the Civil War, Lincoln came up with a plan called Reconstruction. He wanted to bring the North and South together and have a "whole" country instead of a divided one. There were many Republicans in Congress that opposed the President's plan because they blamed the South for starting the war. They also believed that the President should not have control over the reconstruction but instead the Congress should control it. On April 15, 1965, President Lincoln was assassinated and his dream of the Reconstruction plan ended. Jackson became President and believed that the South needed to be controlled. Even though the war ended, slaves found it to be a difficult time because being told you are free is different than being allowed to act free. At the end of the book, the author includes a time line, glossary, and a list of websites for more investigation of the topic. Books written in graphic format are favorites of mine. They make it perfect for students who are reluctant readers and never seem to finish a book on their own. They are also a wonderful way to introduce nonfiction books to young people. Young adults who want to read anything they can get their hands on will enjoy the graphics and fast paced text. This book is ideal for the classroom and for personal libraries. This book gives excellent information, it is well written, and provides an interesting way to understand history. Reviewer: Kathie M. Josephs
