Radio Bemba Sound System

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Mark Schwartz
Fans who first met Manu Chao through his hit Clandestino are in for a surprise from the live Radio Bemba Sound System, but longtime partisans of Chao's band Mano Negra will be thrilled. Rather than re-create the dreamy acoustic ambience of his previous solo albums, Chao has convened the Radio Bemba big band to tear through these and Mano Negra classics in the time-honored anarchic style that has earned him the undying affection of the Latin alternative. Chao's solo work has fed heartily on his years with the itinerant French band, and Radio Bemba Sound System is in many ways a refinement of the Mano Negra sound.
Dub-style bass, a riot of brass, multilingual dancehall chatting, punk guitar, and hectic tempos come in and out of focus, fleshing out Chao's simple melodies and agitprop declarations, reprising themes and samples toward the creation of one extended symphony, albeit one carved into 29 tracks. Mano Negra favorites such as "Machine Gun," "Mala Vida," and "King Kong Five" get energetic treatments, while the relentless, percolating ska tempos let up for moodily agitated treatments of "Clandestino," "El Viento," and other solo material. The success of Chao's nonstop entertainment depends on serious musical versatility, not to mention stamina, and the Radio Bemba band, which includes members of the extended Mano Negra family, doesn't disappoint. There's a reason why Manu Chao is such a renowned road warrior, and from the party tracks "Casa Babylon" and "Indios de Barcelona" to the lighters-blazing sing-alongs such as "Por el Suelo," Radio Bemba Sound System delivers a heady account.
All Music Guide - Drago Bonacich
In July 2002, Manu Chao performed a live show in Japan, ending a worldwide tour carried out with his band, Radio Bemba New System, a multicultural group consisting of ten talented musicians from different countries. From Jamaican reggae to Latin alternative pop
ock, including rock en español, hip-hop, flamenco, and French rock, The Live Album delivers a collection of hits from 1998's Clandestino, 2001's Ultima Estacion Esperanza, and Mano Negra's legacy, the Parisian rock outfit named in honor of an Andalusian anarchist group that served as Manu Chao's breakthrough in the music industry. In addition, the 29-track record features the previously unreleased "Bienvenido a Tijuana," "Rumba de Barcelona," and a version of the classic Afro-Caribbean-inflected hit "Blood and Fire." Recorded at Paris' Grande Halle de La Villette in September 2001, The Live Album is a multilingual and experimental live experience featuring the best of Manu Chao.
