Overview

This 1995 CD contains two jazz-oriented radio broadcasts by the early Gene Krupa Big Band. Superior in general to their studio recordings of the era, these performances have plenty of fine solo space for trumpeters Shorty Sherock and Corky Cornelius and tenorman Sam Donohue; the drummer/leader is prominent in the ensembles, and Irene Daye takes seven vocals (there are also nine instrumentals). The announcer (who constantly calls Krupa "America's Number One Drummer Boy") is a bit annoying, but the swinging music is consistently excellent, making this CD a definitive example of Gene Krupa's Orchestra before Anita O'Day and Roy Eldridge joined up.
