Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Joan Elste
Raffi McCaffrey has sickle-cell anemia, a disease that saps his strength and weakens his body. Raffi's wonderful spirit carries him through this sweet story that any child with a terrible disease such as his can relate to. Raffi is thrilled when he learns he will be spending two whole days on vacation with his father and his best friend, Carlito, camping out on Bare Island. Raffi is strong enough to get around with a walking stick, and the thought of two entire days away from his sister, Serena, complaining about something all the time, gives him even more strength. To add to his excitement, there are places to explore, puffins to study, and roasted sausage on a campfire, but things take an eerie turn as soon as night settles in. Both friends are disturbed by odd sounds outside their tent, and they swear there are pirates living on the island. Raffi's dad is the culprit, or is he? This story unfolds nicely with an unexpected surprise ending that children will love. Reviewer: Joan Elste
