Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Phyllis Kennemer
Rafi and Rosi are coquies, tiny tree frogs found in Puerto Rico. They introduce young readers to the joys, and sometimes the fears, of the Puerto Rican festival of Carnival. In the first chapter, Rafi does not want to be disturbed as he is making his vejigante mask, so he tells Rosi to dress up like the Carnival queen. Rosi takes his suggestion seriously and is disappointed to discover that she is too young to be queen. Rafi cheers her up by parading her around the neighborhood in his decorated wagon. Rafi makes a periscope in the second chapter and tricks Rosi into thinking he has X-ray vision. Rafi and Rosi climb a tree to watch the parade on the last day of Carnival in the third chapter. When Rosi becomes engrossed with the pretend funeral procession for the Sardine, Rafi leaves quietly and dons his vejigante costume. Rosi is so frightened by the mask that she screams and runs to hide under the stage. The loving friendship between these siblings is evident throughout. The colorful illustrations are filled with action and reveal interesting information about the Carnival festival as it is celebrated in Puerto Rico. Part of the “Dive into Reading!” series. Reviewer: Phyllis Kennemer, Ph.D.; Ages 5 to 8.
