K-Gr 2 This is no more appealing than the first three adventures of two rag dolls and their nanny. The slight plot concerns Violet Pickles' use of an old printing press to publish a newspaper for the town of Fern Hill. The details are tedious and uninteresting at best, and the wordiness of the text put it out of the range of the intended audience for independent reading. As a read-aloud the book also fails. In addition to the unnecessary length of the text, there is little action, humor, or plot twists. The watercolor illustrations are a cross between Holly Hobbie and Strawberry Shortcake, with a slight Cabbage Patch feeling thrown in for good measure. In short, there is nothing of appeal here.
