Overview

Michael Tobias' latest work of fiction is a shocking, breath-stopping political thriller which tracks the fury of an outraged ex-Special Forces veteran who turns to violent retribution in defense of the earth and its fauna. Rage and Reason is an unstoppable rollercoaster of action which explodes across four continents—a chief executive's severed head is served up at a stockholder's luncheon...a furrier is skinned alive...Thai poachers are deftly eliminated...and the first day of hunting season in the Maine woods is turned into a human massacre. Rage and Reason is as vivid a portrayal of the horrors of vivisection and the meat industry as Upton Sinclair's classic The Jungle.
"A terrific story, told from the heart, its soul rich with knowledge. Some people and corporations should lose sleep wondering if Rage & Reason will ever become a real life thriller for them."—Ingrid E. Newkirk, President, PETA—People For The Ethical Treatment Of Animals

When it first came out in India, almost 20 years ago, by a subsidiary of Penguin Books, it must have shocked a country mistakenly thought of as "revering" cows when, in truth - as Tobias more than probably any person alive, knows that this is untrue. This novel, from a major global ecologist, sets the story right: the author has obviously "been there". Many scientists THINK they know what is going on in the trenches; animal rights lawyers, biologists, climate change theoreticians, United Nations specialists, government officials... they have never stared a cow in the eyes, lived with donkeys, lived in caves in Tibet, done field research in god knows how many countries and on every continent. Read this author's bio....in a million places....he is the real deal. My wife and I and kids read this novel and have purchased hundreds of copies for everyone we know. It is the most literary, complex, eloquent, no holds barred hands down, take no prisoners ultimate animal rights work of art. The animal kingdom owes Tobias their lives....how many have been saved by this book? We personally know of hundreds who have become vegans having read it; or, more than Vegan, Jains. Ironic, given the very real violence depicted in its luminous pages. Rage & Reason is the ultimate animal liberation credo; much like Marx's or Lenin's manifesto. It is earth changing; mind bending. Thank God for Barnes and Noble carrying this astonishing work. It should have gotten the Pulitzer, the National Book Award, just as Ingrid Newkirk should have gotten (and one day will) the Nobel Peace Prize. Tobias is the Nelson Mandella of animal rights. This book should be required reading for everyone in the sciences, the humanities, in law, politics, international affairs, comparative religions, economics, and ethics.

I pray that everyone -EVERYONE- reads this book. When is the movie coming out? I would vote for Mel Gibson starring in, and Directing it. After Apocalypto, he should be able to pull it together. What an incredibly important work of fiction! Tobias has got it.

Complex, Dostoyevsky-like, this existentialist journey delves harrowingly into the soul and heart of compassion with a pace that is terrifying. When the reader surfaces, it is as if the world were gone, and what was left were the animals themselves, grieving for the world but exerting their own indomitable spirit of survival. The metaphor is really an allegory of human life at the deepest levels. I hope every student will read this every teacher every politican and every corporate CEO who wants to make this a better world. Tobias has the best qualities of Virgil, of Faulkner, and of William Styron. RAGE & REASON is astonishing.

Rage and Reason has to be one of the best, but most controversial books on such a delicate topic. Direct action in animal rights. The main character gets fed up with the monsterous abuses animal researchers and profiteers were practicing at the expense of the suffering creatures. His reACTION was using force. Violence, to stop the abuses. Without giving the plot away, it is a action packed novel. You will be shocked with the content and amazed with the twists and turns. I was not thrilled with the ending, but it is what makes this book so riveting! Must read this one!
