Overview

As I write this, I have before me on my desk, propped up against the telephone, an old rag doll. Dear old Raggedy Ann!
The same Raggedy Ann with which my mother played when a child.
There she sits, a trifle loppy and loose-jointed, looking me squarely in the face in a straightforward, honest manner, a twinkle where her shoe-button eyes reflect the electric light.
Evidently Raggedy has been to a "tea party" today, for her face is covered with chocolate.
She smiles happily and continuously.
True, she has been nibbled by mice, who have made nests out of the soft cotton with which she has been stuffed, but Raggedy smiled just as broadly when the mice nibbled at her, for her smile is painted on.
What adventures you must have had, Raggedy!

Presents a collection of Raggedy Ann stories, including "Raggedy Ann Rescues Fido," and "Raggedy Ann and the Kittens."

Meet the Author

John Barton Gruelle was born on December 24, 1880 in Arcolla, Illinois. His father was an artist in Indiana and Johnny beat 1,500 other entrants to win a cartooning contest in 1911, thus beginning his career.

He began illustrating children's books in 1914 and writing his own in 1916. Gruelle had a daughter named Marcella, to whom he gave a dusty, faceless rag doll she found in the attic. He merely drew a face upon it and named her Raggedy Ann.

Marcella loved the doll so much that Johnny figured other children might like her as well and patented it in 1915. In 1918, he wrote the first "Raggedy Ann" book, about Marcella's adventures with her doll. They were extremely successful and became a series of books and toys.

Unfortunately, Marcella received a shot at school without parental consent and died from diphtheria at thirteen years old. After that, Gruelle's only reminder of his daughter was the doll. He died on January 8, 1938 of a heart attack in Miami Florida at the age of 58.
