Overview

The fifth book in the fast-paced and imaginative series about four adventurous friends and the secret world hidden in their local zoo. Ella, Noah, Richie, and Megan are in trouble—and so is the Secret Zoo! A captivating series for tween readers praised as "action packed and breathless" by Publishers Weekly, and "a fast-paced mix of mystery and fantasy" by School Library Journal.

The Secret Zoo is an incredible world hidden beneath the regular Clarksville Zoo, where animals and humans peacefully coexist as equals. It is full of marvels. But even in the Secret Zoo, there are dangers . . . and forbidden places. When the scouts' friends are held in the off-limits sector—a never-ending maze of aquariums—Noah, Megan, Richie, and Ella must be at their most courageous. This page-turning mystery and adventure is perfect for reluctant readers!

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Joan Vogel
The Clarksville Zoo is like no other. Here four friends enter a parallel world beneath the regular zoo where humans and animals exist as equals but where danger and horror also lurk at the turn of a page or the opening of a portal. The fifth installment of “The Secret Zoo” series finds the children—Noah, Megan, Ella, and Richie—allied again with the somewhat mysterious Mr. Darby and members of the secret society against the personification of darkest evil. DeGraff, the Shadowist, is back. Because of this, four of the children’s friends—Tameron, Sam, Hannah, and Tank—and two close animal partners—Blizzard, a large polar bear, and Little Bighorn, a rhino—are now prisoners in DeGraff’s twisted, diabolical world. The double rescue entails the courage of friendship, the help of magic, and the necessity of teamwork for good to triumph over wickedness. The author never loses sight of his audience in this imaginative and exciting part-mystery, part-fantasy offering. The intricate plot moves from one world to another smoothly and carries the story swiftly to a cliffhanger ending. Most of the chapters are short and the vocabulary is appropriate for middle readers. Reluctant readers will enjoy the action packed adventures. There is ample opportunity for the desired reactions of “ Yuck!,” “Gross!,” and “Ewoooh!” as the heroes wade through crunchy insects, guts, and snakes; bat away spiders; evade reeking, bug infested Sasquatches; get stung by jellyfish; and welcome chameleons crawling all over their bodies on signal. This is a worthwhile addition to any middle school library. Reviewer: Joan Vogel; Ages 9 to 12.
