Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Because of its geography, Pennsylvania was very important in the pioneering of railroads in this country. Traces of these early railroads can still be found throughout the state. Treese, historian and archivist at Bryn Mawr College, looks at both the history and the remains of Pennsylvania railroads. One part history and one part travel guide, her book is divided into eight chapters to cover each of the state's tourism regions. Although focused on 19th- and early 20th-century railroad history, the book includes updates on later developments. There are short biographies of important railroad men and descriptions of notable historic railroad sites such as bridges, tunnels, stations, inclined plains, abandoned track, and railroad museums. The more than 100 well-chosen photographs and prints are a joy and fit well with the text; frustratingly absent, however, are maps, and one is necessary to follow the book's descriptions of routes and locations. Still, this somewhat eclectic mix of history, archaeology, and travelog is informative and very satisfying to read. Highly recommended to all public libraries in Pennsylvania and adjoining areas. Other libraries with railroad holdings should consider as well.-Lawrence R. Maxted, Gannon Univ., Erie, PA Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
