Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sara Lorimer
Tropical rain forests are noisy, colorful ecosystems with insects, monkeys, colorful birds, bright flowers and, of course, the rain—more than 80 inches annually. There are five layers in a tropical rain forest: the emergent (top) layer, the canopy, the understory, the shrub layer, and the forest floor, each with its own plants and animals. This colorful book does a good job of introducing young readers to the amazing life of tropical rain forests. The sentences are short and the vocabulary is simple, but it does not feel dumbed-down. Beautiful illustrations match the text; each page is covered with gorgeous colors, and the scenes are always relevant. The indigenous human inhabitants of the tropical rain forests are not mentioned. The "Rain Forest in Trouble" section brings up deforestation and how protecting rain forests is important. Back matter includes a glossary, an index, and suggestions for further reading. From the "Amazing Science Ecosystems" series.
