Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
It's a gray day, and one little girl does not want to get out of bed. She feels every bit as grouchy as the cloudy, rainy sky outside. Her mother and father's cheerful efforts to get her up only worsen her mood, until she angrily stomps out of bed and into the rain. There her angry stomp turns into a joyful dance as her parents join her in a "rain romp." Angry frowns turn into giggles with the help of her loving family: "the three of us will always be an all-weather, stick-together, stomp-it-out, romp-it-out, love-you, hug-you family." The poetic text is enhanced by the lovely muted watercolors. This story will appeal to any young child who has a hard time getting up in the morning. 2002, Greenwillow Books,
— Cheryl Peterson
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1-It's a gray and dreary day, one that matches the mood of the child in this story as she wakes up one morning. Even her mother's cheerfulness and Dad's "snazzy, jazzy tune" can't shake her from her gloom. Mom describes her as "Mad as a wet hen." But, truth be known, the girl feels even angrier; she and the sky are "-howling prowling scowling wolverines." But when she runs outside into the rain, stamping and stomping, that foul mood begins to melt away. Her parents join her "Raaaaaain romp!" and the storm, both outside and inside, subsides. Back home it's time for games and singing around a warm fire. Wolcott's watercolor-and-gouache illustrations are rendered in rainbow hues. The colors have been allowed to run so that they blend into each other, suggestive of the rain itself. A simple, pleasant story that would pair well with Don Freeman's Rainbow of My Own (Puffin, 1978).-Roxanne Burg, Thousand Oaks Library, CA Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.

Meet the Author

Jane Kurtz
Jane Kurtz

Jane Kurtz grew up in East Africa and has recently traveled and spoken at schools in both East and West Africa. On two childhood visits to the United States, she found many things to worry her. (One was black widow spiders, which she was sure were going to crawl into her bed the year she lived in California.) But none of the strange new things she saw in America felt quite as unnerving if she could climb into bed with her older sister or tell stories to her younger brother. She now lives in Hesston, Kansas.
