Children's Literature - Debby Willett
Rain...it's all about water. The water falls from the sky, but not always in the same way. Sometimes it does fall like water—in the form of raindrops. Sometimes those raindrops are small and light and are fun to dance in. Other times those raindrops come inside busy storms and fall fast and furiously. The earth needs the rain or it will become too dry. Farmers and ranchers depend on the rain to water their crops and sustain their animals. Other times the water is falling too fast and can cause a flood which can destroy buildings and crops. The photographs are colorful and appropriate to the text. The "Blastoff! Reader's" series, at Level 3 for early readers, is a combination of text and concept load. Using the simple photographs, there is less reliance on visuals and more on the longer sentences which develops a more literary language. Through reading comprehension and confidence, your child will develop a love for reading that will last a lifetime. The author has included a glossary at the end of the book focusing on words that are more relevant to the learning experience. In addition, there is a page with resources and Internet links. Finally, credit is given to the photographs used and an index is included. Part of the subseries entitled "Weather." Reviewer: Debby Willett
