Barnes & Noble - Martin Johnson
Mariah Carey has been a very busy lady during this last year of the millennium. Not only did she play a starring role in the upcoming film "All That Glitters" and pull down a smaller part in the movie "The Bachelor," she's currently working on renovating her new Manhattan loft and, reportedly, breaking in a new boyfriend. That's quite a heavy load, but amidst all that activity she also found time to record RAINBOW, a 1999 update of the slick, sumptuous R&B-pop found on 1997's BUTTERFLY that's sure to satisfy her worldwide web of avid fans.
Some of Carey's new songs suggest that she's still getting her footing after parting with longtime songwriting partner Walter Afanasieff. But she makes up for the loss on a number of excellent collaborations with an array of major artists. Two versions of the tune "Heartbreaker" -- one with Jay-Z, the other opposite Missy Elliott and Da Brat -- show that Carey can step in the ring with hip-hop's toughest, as does the infectious "Crybaby," on which a thundering bass line underpins Snoop Dogg's flavorful flow. On the pop-R&B tip, Carey shares leads with Usher on the pleasantly bouncy "How Much" and with Joe and 98° on the ballad "Thank God I Found You." And if you crave Mariah up front and alone, she shines brightly working a tense, funky Timbaland beat on the up-tempo "Did I Do That?". She might not be breaking any new ground, but RAINBOW is a satisfying, at times scintillating, reminder that Mariah is simply one of the most reliable divas on the planet.
All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Mariah Carey claims Rainbow, her first album since divorcing Tommy Mottola, "chronicles my emotional roller coaster ride of the past year," but less subjective listeners could be forgiven for viewing it as simply another Mariah Carey album. After all, all the elements are in place -- the crossover dance hits, the ballads, the cameos, the hip producers, the weird cover choice from the early '80s. But dig a little deeper, and her words ring true. Rainbow is the first Carey album where she's written personal lyrics, and allusions to her separation from Mottola are evident throughout the album, even if it doesn't really amount to the "story" she mentions in the liner notes. As appropriate for any introspective album, it's a bit ballad-heavy, which makes Rainbow seem a little samey. Yet that's not the only reason the record has a weird sense of déjà vu, since this follows the same formula as its two predecessors, distinguished primarily by her newfound fondness for flashing flesh. That repetition isn't necessarily a problem, since she does formula very well, managing to appeal to both housewives as well as b-boys. Rainbow proves that she can still pull off that difficult balancing act, but it's hard not to be a little disappointed that she'd didn't shake the music up a little bit more -- after all, it would have been a more effective album if the heartbreak, sorrow, and joy that bubbles underneath the music were brought to the surface.

    Mariah's best next to Mimi...

This is the second album of Mariah's I bought. AND I ABSOLUTLY LOVE IT!! Mariah's has such a good voice!! She is such a good writer too. But I still think that the Emancipation of Mimi is her best to date. Mariah, you are amazing!!!! Don't stop doing what you do!!

Mariah ´s Rainbow a classic or Hip Hop.

Few Years ago I wrote about this album and it´s not so bad but not to good either Mariah has just gone to another level in her career and that is more hip than before. she teams up with hiphipheavies like Damizza,MasterP and shakespere Briggs with DjClue and Ken Duro then she works with Rn,B Mogul Jermaine Dupri on one song How Much featuring Usher Raymond. On The ballads her Classics she teams up with Duo Jimmy Jam And Terry Lewis on the songs Can´t Take That Away,Against All Odds Phil collins coversong,Petals,Thank God I found You featuring Joe&98 degrees,Bliss and Rainbow interlude. Popheavie and 14 times grammywinner Mr.David Foster(56)teams up with Mariah on the spanishsparkle ballad After Tonight a beautiful song that only David is known for. i wish Mariah had done more songs with him on this album but she worked with him again 2001 they did a b-side ballad There For Me on the Hero-Never Too Far single released for the attack on America sept 11th 2001. Rainbow is a Mariah Classic with hiphop and breathtaking ballads and this was the last album she released at Columbia records and shortly after this album she got her Nervous Breakdown when Her illfaded movie and soundtrack Glitter was released sept 11th 2001.

    Rainbow

I Would give Rainbow 10 stars if it wasn´t for the rappers on this album they just ruin everything they can´t fit in a Mariah song and never will. Mariah is like Celine dion they descover new sound and that is great but rappers I don´t think so. Mariah has a great 7 octave´s voice and when she tops the high notes she makes every one cry she is unique a phenomenal icon and maybe her influenses comes from rappers she says she is a fan of ODB,Wu Tang Clan and P Diddy that is okey because they are better than Busta Rhymes and all the others today she is working with. My onpinion is that for Mariah. Work with ODB,P Diddy or Jermaine Dupri if you wan´t a hip-hop song. if you wan´t pop, ballads stick with Walter Afanasieff,Jimmy Jam&Terry Lewis,David Foster or others who makes great songs. Rainbow is a nice album but not great my fave songs are Heartbreaker,Can´t Take That Away,After Tonight,X-Girlfriend,Petals,Against All Odds and Thank God I Found You.

    Creativity, Pure Creativity

One of my favorite singers has got to be Mariah Carey, because she's extremely creative when it comes to putting an album together, as well as offering versatility within music styles or songs written. Through her music, you are able to explore her mind, her thoughts, her feelings, and that shows on Rainbow, her collection of emotions from 4 years ago. If you admire creativity and versatility, purchase and listen to this album. It has something for everyone.

    Rainbow

Rainbow is colour ful the Cover is nice and Mariah looks sexy in the shorts but the songs on this album is bad and it´s getting worse on her newest realize Charmbracelet her voice is vanishing Mariah had strong and powerful voice in the early 1990´s until Glitter 2001 after that she just whispers and Rainbow have to many hip-hop boring songs and rappers like Snoopdoggy dogg usher master P are messing this album apart if there wasn´t for the beautiful ballads on this album like After Tonight,Against All Odds and Heartbreaker the catcy pop-hiphop no 1#single feat Jay-Z i would have given Mariah 1 star or non. What happened to Mariah why did she deside to stop working with Walter Afanasieff they where so great together i don´t understand and i think David Foster did a wonderful song on this album the epic ballad After Tonight he also did There For Me in 2001 a power ballad for the tribut to heroes of the september 11th 2001 attack on America.Mariah belt out her voice like in the early 1990´s she sounded incredible and David made amazing job he is like Walter they bring out the Magic in Mariah´s amazing voice why isn´t she working with them anymore i just ask.

    Mariah Carey does it again!

This album rules! It's not as good as her previous albums, such as Butterfly, and DayDream, but this album is to another level, that's why it's awesome. Mariah Carey rules!

    MARIAH...

Mariah Carey is a very talent girl. I love this new album. 'Can't Take That Way' is the best song on the album because it tells people to never give up and to not listen when people put you down. It has helped me in many of my prombles.

    MARIAH IN HER PRIME

I have been a very big fan of Mariah's for about 6yrs now and in that time i have purchased all of Mariah's albums and singles. I belive that Mariah is in her prime at the moment, the 'Rainbow' album is one of her best so far and shows that her style and sound has not only changed with the times but has become even more original and inspiring as before. On her album she works well with other artists and also includes an amazing cover of Phill Collins 'Against All Odds'which is peformed with feeling and is a very moving song for me. All in all, Mariah remains the best and i can't wait for her concert on the 26th!!!

    ''THUMBS DOWN FOR NEW MARIAH''

Me being a Mariah fan ever since her first album was expecting something more deeper and personal something that would top 1997 ''butterfly'' but Mariah has leaned more in rap and hip/hop and moreless careless about the early recording that were filled with r&b and pop. Mariah needs to go back to her early days and re-discover herself in her song writting skills witch proved to be very week on ''rainbow'' the lyircs are the same thing over and over again! so I would not recomend this album to anyone who liked Mariah in her early stages!

Mariah's cd is really like a RAINBOW

I thought the cd so cool. I wouldn't mind listening to it non-stop. Mariah is my main idol and that will never change for sure.

Mariah at #1 again???? Hell yeah baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This album definitely shows us a different side of Mariah. She busted out with Heartbreaker which, NO, it is NOT a rip off of Fantasy, Dreamlover, or Honey. This is a new Mariah but you can't expect her style to also be 100% new. This is a good album to lounge to and I'm glad that her music is more autobiographical now. It gives it that special personal touch. This album, Rainbow, is 100% Mariah to the fullest and I recommend this CD to anyone except for #11 (Mariah, Why DID You Do That?).
