Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Both lyrical verses and classical illustrations abound in this nonfiction book that begins with a seed on the ground. Plants and animals are added one at a time, and each verse ends with "and the rainforest grew all around, all around, the rainforest grew all around." The cumulative tale depicts vines, a snake, an ant, a sloth, and other interesting creatures and plants until the ending completes the cycle with a seed that flies out of a pod. Sidebars contain several facts about each plant and animal. A "For Creative Minds" section at the end provides sentences to be matched with the pictures. More matching questions discuss seeds and how they spread. Readers are invited to download pages from the publisher's website rather than writing or coloring in the book itself. The last page discusses things we use and eat that come from the rainforest. A recipe for "Rainforest Cookies" is given, with ingredients that were produced from crops grown in the rainforest written in bold print. The tones of greens and browns with contrasting yellows and reds provide beautiful paintings that enhance and complement the poetic writing and interesting factual material.

Meet the Author

Susan K. Mitchell is an author with many hats in her collection: author, mom, wife, pre-school teacher and Spanish teacher. Susan loves creating a silly world of words for kids. Surrounded by kids all day, every day, Susan has no shortage of story ideas. While using the song, The Green Grass Grows All Around, in her preschool class, she saw the excitement her students had learning about life cycles in a fun medium. "They grew gigglier and more out of breath as the song grew longer and longer," Susan said of her students. Since the rainforest is one of the most complex ecosystems on our planet, she knew she could make it fun to learn about too. The lives in the Amazon rainforest are so intertwined that the song made a perfect background to teach children about the fragile circle of life. So she created a story that grew higher and higher, building on each plant and animal that resides in the endangered rainforest until the end becomes the beginning again! In addition to this book, Susan is the author of Stone Pizza, a picture book based on the Stone Soup tale. A member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, Susan writes regularly for a variety of children's print and online magazines: Hopscotch Magazine for Girls, Boys' Quest, Wee Ones Magazine and Guideposts for Kids Online (GP4K). She also writes monthly for Houston magazine, Style & Living. Susan, her husband, two wonderful daughters, their dog, two new kittens, and a very cheeky beta fish live outside of Houston. She also really needs a bigger hat rack!

    Rich in illustrations and knowledge!

The Rainforest Grew All Around Yum, a rainforest cookie recipe, informative sidebars, and luscious illustrations, make this lovely book a keeper! The text by author Susan K. Mitchell is a cumulative rhyme that takes the reader through life in the rainforest from giant trees to tiny insects and frogs. It highlights both plants and animals. Connie McLennan¿s illustrations are both rich and informative. Children will enjoy the variations of subject and texture in the paintings, perhaps discovering small plants and insects not mentioned in the text. The book is a marvelous blend of text and illustration. Besides the recipe there are two matching games at the back. The verse is adapted from the old English cumulative folk song, ¿The Tree In The Wood.¿ Children ages 3 to 7 will delight in this book, which will be enjoyed for years to come in both home and classroom libraries.
