A Rainforest Habitat

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Joyce Rice
The beautiful rainforests of our world are home to many different species of animal and plant life. Each of these species live in the rainforest because they can find the elements they need to survive, such as food and water. One of the most well-know rainforests is the one found in the Amazon in South America. Although a general description of rainforests is included here, this title deals specifically with the Amazon rainforest. The chain of life is described on a spread, showing the food chain of plants and animals. The authors include photographs of the animal life found in this rainforest, such as a jaguar, turtles, and birds. One spread includes a beautiful underwater photograph of a manatee. Chapters discuss how the rainforest provides food, shelter, and safety for its inhabitants. A single page index includes additional photographs and references to vocabulary words that have been in bold type. The series, "Introducing Habitats," includes twelve titles. This is an excellent series for science classrooms as well as media center collections. The text is simple, and the illustrations are bright and colorful. Young readers will be drawn to the book for its photographs and will be able to read most of the text without assistance.
